Malamute
Alaskan Malamutes are sledge dogs, not sled dogs which is a semantic way of saying they can pull larger and heavier loads – up to 3,000 pounds! Also known as the Mal or Mally, the Malamute first emerged in the 1900s when gold prospectors came north to the Yukon and bred their dogs with local Alaskan breeds. Since then, Malamutes have been employed pulling sledges in Antarctica as part of early expeditions as well as carrying supplies during the first and second World Wars! Famous Malamute owners include Robin Williams, Melissa Gilbert, and George Lucas whose Alaskan Malamute Indiana lent his name to Indiana Jones and inspired the character of Chewbacca in Star Wars! A cinema icon indeed!
