The American Eskimo Dog looks like a tiny Samoyed, it's actually a white German Spitz. As a result of anti-German sentiment during World War II the breed was renamed the American Eskimo Dog not because it has anything to do with northern indigenous and Inuit peoples, but after the breeder that popularized the breed in the United States. If the AKC's official name for the breed seems awkward, it is also known as the Cloud Spitz and the American Spitz.
