Dalmatians are an old and specialized breed from the fields of Croatia. They were bred as hunting dogs, but soon became known as Carriage Dogs, firehouse dogs, and movie stars! Dalmatian puppies are born completely white and their spots come in slowly over the first few weeks. Because this breed has such a distinct coat, there has been a lot of inbreeding to keep the genes pure. This has led to many hereditary health problems including deafness, hip dysplasia, and liver problems. It has also led to the "Dalmatian Heritage Project" in which key breeding is attempting to produce Dalmations with fewer genetic issues.
