Domesticated hedgehogs have been kept as pets since the days of the Roman Empire in 4th century BCE, but they've recently gained fresh interest among pet owners since 1980. They are considered exotic pets and some US states and countries restrict ownership. In the wild, Hedgehogs are wanderers, so Hedgehogs kept as pets must have access to a running wheel for exercise to avoid stress.
