Korean Jindo
The Jindo is hailed for its athleticism and loyalty. In 1993, an 83 year-old woman on Jindo island sold her dog to a man who lived 180 miles away and the dog was so devoted it escaped its new owner and ran the full distance to be reunited. This story is beloved among Koreans, being retold in cartoons, books, and even as a memorial statue! The Jindo dog is the 53rd national treasure of South Korea and as a result it's illegal to export Jindos outside of the country. All Jindo dogs existing abroad are either owned by South Korean citizens or mixed breeds.
