The Newfoundland was named for the Canadian region. It's known for its size, strength, gentleness, and loyalty. They were bred to assist fishermen on the high seas and have a thick insulated coat and webbed feet for that purpose. These traits also help them assist in water rescues. For all these reasons and more, they are often known as "the gentle giant."
