Redbone Coonhound
The Redbone Coonhound is an American hunting dog bred to hunt racoons, deer, boar, bear, and cougar. They follow their noses through the woods barking up a storm until they trap the prey and sit quietly and wait for the hunter to show up. Their coats are a deep red, but that is not where they get their name. One of the earliest breeders was a man named Peter Redbone, who lent his name to the breed. The Redbone Coonhound was inducted into the UKC in 1902 but not recognized by the AKC until 2010 despite it being an American breed. Perhaps the most famous Redbone Coonhounds were featured in the novel “Where the Red Fern Grows” which I’m willing to bet made every elementary schooler in the US bawl their eyes out.
