Weimaraners were bred as hunting dogs for royalty. They started with large game like bear and boar, but as larger hunting fell out of fashion they were switched to smaller game like fowl and rabbits. The name comes from the Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach in Germany. A nickname for them is the "Grey Ghost" because of their blue coat and pale eyes.
